Abstract

Societies,likeindividuals,canbecomeaddictedtopatternsofdetrimentalandunsustainablebehavior.Wecanlearnfromoneofthemostsuccessfultherapiesattheindividualscale,motivationalinterviewing(MI).MIisbasedonengagingaddictsinapositivediscussionoftheirgoals,motives,andfutures.OneanalogytoMIatthesocietalleveliscommunityengagedscenarioplanning,whichcanengageentirecommunitiesinbuildingconsensusaboutpreferredalternativefuturesviapublicopinionsurveysandforums.Effectivetherapiesforsocietaladdictionsarepossible,butrequirere-balancingeffortawayfromonlypointingoutthedireconsequencesofcurrentbehaviorandtowardalsobuildingatrulysharedvisionofapositivefutureandwaystogetthere.
