Abstract

This chapter's focus is on the challenges encountered by students and teachers in the Middle Years of schooling (Years 5-8) in the processes of literacy learning and teaching. It offers a range of strategies to ameliorate difficulties, to engage reluctant readers, writers, speakers and users of technology, and to stimulate enthusiasm for literacy in its myriad forms. The Australian Curriculum informs and underpins this chapter. Insights and rich tasks of demonstrated efficacy in the classroom are provided by way of interviews with experienced Middle Years practitioners and are supported by current research in literacy education.
