Equivalence and Equations in Early Years Classrooms

Abstract

The article presents several activities that focuses on equivalence and equations in order to allow five-year old students understand the structure of equations including the equal sign. It states that in understanding equal as equivalence, one should take note that when computing the value of two expressions arithmetic thinking is required. The students were instructed to play paint and animal pictures to make their own equivalent stories. They created equivalence and discussed their own story.
